Embroidery is an important part of Dao life in Ta Phin Village. Women are very proud of their abilities, and are not shy about telling others what is good embroidery, and what is bad embroidery. Amazingly enough, the Dao do not look at the front of a piece of cloth when they embroider. Instead they do all of their work from the back, and they laugh at the mere suggestion that it would be easier to do if looking at the front.

These people photos of the Dao are some of my favorite portraits in this archive. I enjoy taking pictures of Dao people because of their warm smiles and vibrant colors. Travel photography is really fun when the subjects interact well with a photographer.
Note: The Dao people are known as the Mien people and Yao people in other parts of the world. Dao is pronounced Dzao or Zao.
